We are definitely energy.  Energy within a physical body. Now, you may wish to consider/translate/ refer to the energy as spirit.  Regardless of what you call it, we are far more than our physical bodies.

The answer to the question correlates with your interpretation/perception of the word ‘spirit’. And from that perspective, we resoundingly have spirit/energy within us, which leaves our physical bodies when we die.
