I’m currently doing a Ph.D. that explores sleep paralysis as a spiritual phenomenon. I’ve found that there is very little academic research that explains the science behind the spiritual experience and whilst there is a lot of science to explain the neurological changes, there is no scientific explanation for experiencers having the same shared experience, especially when they see the entities. This is one of those topics where the academic or research community has to catch up with the experience of the layperson.
Also, the spiritual experience can be complex when one tries to apply the science behind it. The scientific rationale as it relates to spirituality is not there…. yet. Much of my work is about creating those rationales. I firmly believe in the spiritual connection to sleep paralysis having experienced it for over 30 years chronically.
Culturally, there are many terms for the same shared experience, which takes place regardless of age, gender, or cultural background. I’ve created a web page that explains some of them here that you may find interesting. Most cultures across the world interpret the experience spiritually, whether that be with witchcraft, the devil, or persons who have transitioned. I’m also creating a community space to discuss these issues that you are welcome to join here.
Join Sleep Paralysis Explored, a membership site which is focused on sleep paralysis and the phenomena that comes with it such as astral projection, lucid dreaming, psychic abilities, and more. Details can be found HERE.
