Whilst the answers previously submitted are extremely helpful, I’m not completely convinced that they make any difference. For example, I don’t understand why someone who does not have good sleep hygiene doesn’t get sleep paralysis. For me, there must be another causal factor that relates to having episodes. My approach to sleep paralysis is from a spiritual or transformational perspective and whilst sleep hygiene, diet etc are valid, I would advise beginning to explore the experience whilst working on trying to control it. My research finds that there is a psychic link to the experiences which is rarely discussed. Do not be a passive experiencer as you have far more control and abilities whilst in the sleep state than is initially realised.
